Ms. Lauryn Hill debuted her new song, “Black Rage,” during the first show of the “Life Is Good/Black Rage” Tour with Nas on Monday in Dallas. Ms. Hill has described the song as being “about the derivative effects of racial inequity and abuse” and “a juxtaposition to the statement ‘life is good,’ which she believes can only be so when these long standing issues are addressed and resolved.” You can watch part of this performance in the fan video below:
The Dallas Observer wrote, “A re-appropriation of ‘A Few of My Favorite Things,’ Rage is a smart articulation of the social and political constructs informing her description of black rage. And yes, it focuses on racial dynamics, on the description of oppression and its aftermath. The crowd was listening to every word, and afterward, Hill presented the lyrics for those who may have lost them in the contagious beat: “Black rage is founded on draining and draining/Threaten your freedom, so you’ll stop complaining/Poison the water, while they say it’s raining/They call you mad for complaining, complaining/Old time bureaucracy, drugging the youth/Black rage is founded on blocking the truth.”
It was church in there, and I mean that as compliment. She looked back out and said, “Don’t let them tell you who you are. Sometimes you are ahead of the curve. They don’t know what to do with you when you are ahead of the curve.”

Hip-Hop and music superpowers Nas and Ms. Lauryn Hill announce the Life Is Good/Black Rage tour, dates this fall. Both musicians, who are responsible for influencing a generation of music lovers, will share the stage for an experience that fans have long been waiting for. Tickets can be purchased beginning this Friday, with a pre-sale in select markets beginning Thursday.
The tour takes its name from Nas’s groundbreaking #1 album, Life Is Good and “Black Rage,” a new song by Ms. Lauryn Hill about the derivative effects of racial inequity and abuse. The track, which will be released this fall, is described by Ms. Hill as a juxtaposition to the statement “life is good,” which she believes can only be so when these long standing issues are addressed and resolved.
“I use the performance platform as an opportunity to express the energy of that moment, and the intention behind it,” said Ms. Hill. “I’ve been a long standing rebel against the stale, over commoditization. As artists we have opportunity to help the public evolve, raise consciousness and awareness, teach, heal, enlighten and inspire in ways the democratic process may not be able to touch. So we keep it moving.”
“This is history,” Nas said. “Better late than never. Life is good!”

Ms. Lauryn Hill and special guests performed in support of ONEXONE at Toronto’s Kool Haus this weekend. Toronto Life reports that Ms. Hill “was awesome. For almost two hours, without a lull or false step, she rocked the heck out, singing and rapping hits from her classic album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, along with a clutch of Fugees songs.” Here’s a photo from the show:
